Caligula
Caligula by Albert Camus
Upon the death of his sister, Caligula, the Emperor of Rome, disappeared for three days. Upon his return, he has a new command of his power, and decides to exercise his authority in the most despotic and unreasonable ways imaginable. He pushes those around him to extremes and insists on destroying everything around him, and in the process, destroying himself.
This 2019 production, directed by Jess Zlotnick, centred around the intoxicating and suffocating power of grief, politics and love. The design surrounded a dream-like and occasionally grotesque feast, with an epic exhibition of style and decadence.
Incorporating a large amount of physical theatre and circus-inspired movement, this show was an inventive and ambitious take on a demanding classical text.
