This production of Krapp’s Last Tape takes and reinterprets the classic absurdist text, using exciting new digital technologies to wrench the play into the modern day.

This was a production of a particularly demanding play, both creatively and technically. Beckett’s poeticism, acerbic tone and eternally obfuscated meanings are delivered through a unique interplay onstage between the actor and a piece of cutting-edge tech for 1958 - a home tape recorder. While the technology may be archaic by today’s standards, the text endures as a powerful and remarkably prescient commentary on human nature.

Ultimately, one of the most significant challenges in staging Beckett’s work is the ambiguity inherent in his writing. Our team has created an innovative production that speaks to the relationship between past, present and possible future, and the choice as an individual between - as Krapp puts it - being or remaining.

Our design & dramaturgy incorporate new AI technology, such as deepfakes and facial reenactment, to confront the audience with a snippet of a possible future.

This production was a part of the VCA Master of Theatre (Directing) graduate show season in September 2023.
