After Dinner
After Dinner by Andrew Bovell
5 middle-aged workers descend on their local pub, hoping to find an escape from their lives. They wish for friendship, love, freedom, control and for a good view of the band. As the night progresses, we get to see how hard it is to break out of habits of a lifetime, make a change and make a new, real connection.
This play is hilarious, dark, thoughtful and challenging. We see deeply flawed characters struggle against their nature and try to find something new and different. The comedy of the play lies in the lines crossed and cultural conventions breached, and our voyeuristic position allows us a schadenfreude-filled viewing experience.
After Dinner was my first foray into theatre outside of high school, jumping straight into the role of director, and it was a fantastic trial by fire. Rehearsed in less than 4 weeks, with a barebones team, the show entertained and engaged audiences by finding a truthful interpretation of this hilarious play. Unfortunately, we did not have much documentation of this show, and so images are limited.
